Warming up the needy By Celeste Lodewyk During winter the price of electricity rises and the need for heating increases which, for many Marlborough people can be the cause of stress and financial hardship. Elderly, solo parents and people with illnesses are some of those who are forced to face the cold without using their heating sources due to their inability to afford the running costs, according to Lachlan Marshall (pictured), Corps Officer for the Salvation Army Blenheim. The Salvation Army Blenheim responded to this need by creating a free firewood project in 2009 which Lachlan said has helped many ‘in need’. “We identified that there are many who can’t afford wood or to run their heat pumps but still have a fireplace, so we deliver a free load to them so they can keep warm during winter. Firewood project helps disadvantaged Continued from page 1 “This project has really grown over the years and we have received a lot of great support from community groups and businesses to help keep it going,” he said. Wooden pallets, felled trees and grape wood are regularly donated to the project, and those in need of the wood apply to the Salvation Army Blenheim office. “We have been fortunate enough to have Mainfreight, Toll Translink and factories

in Riverlands giving us their unwanted pallets which minimises waste for them and helps out the needy,” Lachlan said. Earlier in the year the project received some funding to employ a part-time worker to cut and sort the wood, while Community Probation Blenheim community workers helped with the deliveries. “This has really helped us out heaps and means we can get the wood to more people who need it,” he said.

DOC warned over 1080 breach The Department of Conservation says it will establish more rigorous processes for aerial 1080 drops after the poisonous pest bait fell near trampers on a Marlborough Sounds walking track last year. The incident sparked an internal review of a pest control operation in the Tennyson Inlet last November and DOC has received a formal warning from the Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service after bait fell onto an area near the Nydia Track that was excluded from the distribution zone. The 1080 bait fell near Kaiuma Bay residents Simon and Carol Caley, who made a formal complaint to Conservation Minister Nick Smith. Nelson Marlborough medical officer of health, Dr Ed Kiddle, said at the time that any risk to the couple’s physical health from this was likely to be minimal. The internal review found that people should not have been allowed on the track during the bait application. DOC North and Western South Island conservation services director Mike Slater said the review confirmed DOC had ‘thorough systems’ in place but also made some recommendations for improvement. “Failure to meet the requirements for aerial 1080 operations is unacceptable and we are ensuring we take measures to prevent a recurrence of the incidents that occurred with this Marlborough Sounds’ operation,” he said.

“We will be reviewing and improving our procedures for aerial pest control operations.” The review found that workers carrying out the operation had overlooked the requirement not to allow people on the track because staff at a local lodge had raised concerns about the impact of closure of the track on its business. It also concluded that the detachment of a bait spreader bucket from a helicopter that same day had contributed to the accidental fall of bait into the track area, as it has disrupted the flying schedule.

The project sees an average of up to 350 deliveries per year all over Marlborough. “We prefer to deliver pallets whole and have people do the cutting themselves, this saves time but we can do the cutting if required.” People who are genuinely in need of free firewood can call into the Salvation Army Blenheim office at 35 George Street between 9am and 12noon Monday to Friday.

Cops catch 118 speeding By Kristy Martin Highway Patrol police detected 184 driving offences in Marlborough over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. Team leader, Sergeant Barrie Greenall, said 118 of those were speed related, but the vast majority were caught travelling at minimal speeds over the limit. The highest speed above the limit was 81km/h in a 50 zone in Seddon, he said. An Australian tourist who was at the wheel received a $300 fine. Police also found an unrestrained child in a speeding car. The six-year-old was a passenger in a vehicle travelling at 111km/h near Kaikoura on State Highway 1. “Generally the traffic flows in Marlborough were very good, very quiet and the majority were wellbehaved,” Sgt Greenall said. “We were quiet compared to other areas.” The operation began at 4pm on Friday and concluded at 6am on Tuesday.

Missing dog unites community

By Kristy Martin A couple’s plea to find their missing dog has touched the hearts of people across Marlborough. Bunny the German shorthaired pointer went missing on May 11 from her Anakiwa property and hasn’t been seen since, despite relentless searching by her owners, Richard and Karen Barker. Karen says she has been overwhelmed by how many people have joined the search for Bunny over the past three weeks, many of them strangers. “If love alone could bring Bunny home, she would be sitting beside me now,” Karen said. “One gentleman took his aeroplane out to search the high ridges over the weekend and the previous week he had been out for two days searching in his car. “A couple from Blenheim brought out their two dogs to search the forestry tracks over the weekend. “Many of the pig hunters in the (Woody Pig and Deer Hunt) competition also took a special interest in looking out for Bunny.” Shopkeepers have put up notices, friends and posties have delivered

flyers around the Sounds and many of the Barkers’ friends have walked and climbed for many kilometres in search of the missing dog. “Lots of people have just texted or phoned to offer words of advice or support. “We have been totally overwhelmed by the population of Marlborough rallying to our support.” The search team also located four other dogs, which have since been returned to their owners or taken to the pound. Bunny went missing at the same time as the Barkers’ other dog, Mertz, and Karen said it was unusual for the pair to wander away from the property. Mertz returned home five days later exhausted, thin, dehydrated and with sore legs. “We have not given up hope, but do realise that the odds are low that we will find Bunny alive,” Karen said. “We could not have had a better search team or more support from close friends, locals and strangers alike and we are incredibly grateful.”

BURGLAR IN COURT A 40-year-old vineyard worker has appeared in court for burglary. The man was arrested in Ward on Monday afternoon over a burglary committed in Kaikoura. He was picked up by Highway Patrol officers after a description of the vehicle was given to police.

Sullivan retires from rowing at 27 By Adam Poulopoulos Olympic rowing gold medallist and Queen Charlotte College old boy Joseph Sullivan says he is ready to move on from the sport after announcing his retirement at the age of 27. Sullivan, who with Nathan Cohen won gold in the men’s double sculls at the 2012 London Olympics, made the announcement yesterday. Sullivan now begins a new career as a firefighter, after earning a full-time job in Auckland. His commitments start with a

However, he took a series of non-selections as a sign a career change was a logical next step. “I was a reserve, and that’s not where I wanted to be. “I just kind of felt it was time for a change. I took it as an opportunity to get out, and I’ve achieved everything I’ve wanted to through rowing.” The announcement marked the end of a career beginning when Joseph moved to Picton aged 13,

and started rowing for QCC and at Picton Rowing Club. When asked if he would miss rowing, he responded honestly. “I guess some days I will but probably not too much. “I’ve been doing it for fourteen years, which is over half my life.” He lists the Olympic win as a career highlight, but also mentions his double sculls gold at the 2010 Rowing World Championships at Lake Karapiro. Overall, Sullivan finished with one Olympic Gold and two World Championship golds.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify a driver who took off without paying for fuel at Springlands petrol station on Wednesday. A Silver Nissan Tiida drove off after the driver put in $81 worth of fuel, police said. The incident occurred at 11.05am at the Z station on Middle Renwick Rd.

BRAWL CLOSES TAVERN Owners decided to shut the doors of the Woodbourne Tavern after a brawl broke out following the pig and deer hunting competition on Sunday. Police were called to the tavern after patrons began fighting, believed to have been sparked by someone taking food off another’s plate. Tavern management said they closed the pub due to safety concerns.

The First National Mark Stevenson Blenheim office also won the National Top Office award, for offices with 11 or more salespeople, for the ninth year in a row. All awards included only New Zealand entries. Ms Church said she was proud to win the Legend award, which acknowledges consistent excellence at a national level. Business booming at Cash Can Do New signage and a traditional pawnbroking symbol are having a positive effect on business for Cash Can Do. The signage and the three gold spheres were installed a week ago, and owner John Firks said people were being drawn to the Arthur Street site. “We’ve done approximately 28 pawns since they went up. It’s a mixture of people coming in.” He said the balls were an old pawnbroking symbol. “In England they have traditional signage. Butchers have a cow, a barber has a red and white-striped pole, and we have the three balls.” Cash Can Do has been pawnbroking since April. Annual resident satisfaction survey 2014 Marlborough District Council will be undertaking its annual resident satisfaction telephone survey in June. Around 800 local residents will be randomly selected to participate to give us their views of our performance over the last year. The survey will be carried out by SIL Research on behalf of Council. The Council uses the results of this survey to: • measure the resident satisfaction of key service areas such as roads and footpaths, libraries, water supply, sewerage systems and community facilities against those targets set in the Annual Plan • identify performance trends by comparing scores to those achieved in previous years • identify the relative priority of the various Council services • help plan where future investment is needed and is

By Celeste Lodewyk Bl e n h e i m wo m a n Kathleen (Kay) Malzard is being remembered for her many contributions to the community after passing away on May 17 after a short battle with illness. The 64-year-old was described by son Shaun as being ‘very generous of heart’ and someone who touched a lot of lives. “She was always community minded and enjoyed volunteer work. She had a lot of friends and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her. “The Beavertown Blenheim Lions Club was like a sisterhood and having them around mum through her illness was an absolute blessing,” he said. Kay was born in Mosgiel and raised in Christchurch before heading to Blenheim in the late 1970’s. She became involved with the Marlborough Women’s Refuge where she volunteered for a number of years, and the Beavertown Blenheim Lions Club which she was heavily involved with for the past 26 years. Within the club Kay served as president, treasurer, secretary and was on the convention for Lions and the Cabinet Secretary for Di Barrett which she won a ‘District Governer’s Appreciation Award’ for. Kay was also awarded the ‘District Bulletin Award’ earlier this year for the best bulletin for area 202. When the Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year Show was first launched nearly 12 years ago Kay became a committee member and was involved in every show. Close friend and fellow Beavertown Blenheim Lion member Carol Taylor said Kay was a very passionate member of the committee and would be “sorely” missed by all.

Shanghai to London News from Noeline Stewart’s blog as she and husband Ron drive a 1967 Peugeot halfway around the world… Think I’m getting the hang of this blog. May be a bit rough but I’m sure you are getting the idea. I may have missed a few days… All the cities/towns look the same as do the people, cars, roads, shops, toilets (yuck) etc. In saying that the roads are great to drive on and very tidy as are the cities. The motorways are all lined with trees and can be two, four or six lanes wide. They all have shoulder lanes as well which are also used for passing. They drive like maniacs and weave in and out but it works well with no one getting upset. And as for the photos, well, eat your heart out Brad Pitt and George Clooney! We’ve had so many photos taken of us, sometimes just about causing accidents as the people taking the photos are driving, clicking away at a speed of 110 km. And as for the waving, I’m sure we have waved just as much as Kate and Wills. So all in all we are back on track, relaxing and enjoying it but we have big driving days. Off to the Terracotta Warriors - what a fantastic place. I do wonder that the warriors were only found in 1974 by a farmer. The farmer is still alive and was signing books. Went and had a look at the City Wall in Xi’an. Once again it was huge. Everything is big. Also had a moat around it. You could hire a bike and ride around which a few of the guys did and got a taxi back. We would have liked to do that but time didn’t allow it so we may come back one day though as there are a few other things we would like to do. Before dinner tonight, we went and saw the start of the Silk Road (I will send photos, I hope) there are many different Silk Roads. I thought there was only one? Then on to a cultural show followed by a traditional dumpling dinner. I think I put back on the weight I lost. Back to hotel 9.30, bed. At last, an early night. Cheers, Noeline

Progress continues on postive path By Celeste Lodewyk The man at the helm of Waikawa Marina, Port Marlborough marinas operations manager Steve McKeown said its growth and business was looking good. “We had a very busy summer which was fantastic including the hardstand. “There was work that came in from as close as Nelson and as far away as Auckland,” he said. Last year Steve told the Sun he believed an expansion on the marina’s berth numbers would have a positive effect on the surrounding businesses, and now a year later he is happy to report “good progress”. “We have been in talks with groups and believe there has been progress and are reassured with the way the process has been going,” he said. Last year saw the construction of a

further 12 boat storage sheds which Steve said were immediately filled, and the refurbishment of the Jolly Roger Restaurant and Bar has begun to replace a marquee with a more permanent structure. “All these changes have been to bring people into the marina to enjoy the environment, and not just for boat owners but for everyone,” he said. Port Marlborough has continued to spend money on the upgrade of Waikawa Marina facilities including a new sealing for the launching ramp. “We are upgrading facilities and plan to continue with this,” Steve said. Waikawa Marina will be showcased at the Auckland on Water Boat Show from September 25-28 where Steve will be part of a group promoting the region with a display stand.

League development continues By Adam Poulopoulos A rugby league fundamentals programme aimed at improving the game at primary school level has proved popular among Blenheim students. A combined 60 pupils from Blenheim School, Redwoodtown School and Bohally Intermediate have been taking part in the programme, which teaches skills like passing, kicking and tackling, for the last five weeks. Tasman Rugby League regional development officer Ryan Charles said the kids had continued to show enthusiasm for the programme. “The interest has always been there. I show up and the kids are waiting for me. “We’ve consistently kept the same numbers, which is probably

Charles said he was joined by Wairau Taniwha coach John Hart for some of the sessions, and hoped that would help establish a link between the students and the representative team for the future. He said the Tasman Titans under-15 and under-17 teams were also good pathways for the students to look to. The programme continues for another week.

Locals place well at Sunbelts Young driver William Exton (pictured) led the Marlborough charge at the 29th annual Sunbelts kart meet over Queen’s Birthday Weekend. William, 10, won the cadet class as well as claiming the trophy for best Marlborough driver over the two-day meeting. Other local junior drivers included Cooper Forbes, 11, who placed third in the junior restricted class and Leighton Stanton, 14, who overcame a collision in his final heat to get seventh in the junior rotax division. In the senior divisions, Daniel Bugler, 16, drove in two classes, finishing third in the open and fifth in the rotax lights, while Tayler Forbes, 18, crashed in Blenheim and had a broken chain in Nelson, but still got fourth in the rotax heavies. The Sunbelts had a good turnout overall, with every kart club in the South Island represented. The first day was held in Blenheim on Saturday, and the meet headed to Nelson for the Sunday racing. The next Kartsport Marlborough meeting is club day on Sunday, July 6.
